On Middle Ground: A History of the Jews of Baltimore

While Baltimore Jewry is but a microcosm of the American Jewish story, Baltimore's status as an important commercial hub and the gatekeeper to the North and South means its residents are influenced by a much broader scope of America than other city inhabitants. The unique experiences of the nineteenth century, such as attempted British invasion during the War of 1812 and the vocal flashpoints during the Civil War to the beginning of industrial movements linked directly to canal and railroad systems, made the port of Baltimore a pivotal entryway for immigrants who sought a new life and became Americans. Jews began to expand the cites demographics and local circumstances began to influence Baltimore Jewish life to create a new brand of Jewish Americans.
